About 30 years ago, while attending college, the founder’s mother Connie set a newspaper article on Tyra’s bed. The article was about amputees and prosthetic devices. Connie knew her son well. She knew that he had a big heart to help others. She knew he was good with people. She suggested that he meet a world renowned Dr. of Pediatrics that worked with child amputees.
While doing his undergraduate studies at UCLA as a Kinesiology major Tyra did what his mother suggested and was introduced to the field of prosthetics and orthotics. He put in a few hours as an undergraduate working with therapists and prosthetists who were providing devices and care to amputees. He secured a job at a well known facility in the field to see if he would like the life of a prosthetist and orthotist. He started off as a “gopher” (go for this and go for that) cleaning, pouring casts, restocking, assisting in fabrication of the devices and assisting practitioners. Tyra had found a passion in life.
After finishing his undergraduate degree at UCLA, Tyra did his post graduate studies in Prosthetics at UCLA and his post graduate studies in Orthotics at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. He eventually became Chief Prosthetist and Orthotist of the office he was managing. In total, he has serviced patients in Beverly Hills, the Valley and Glendale for 17 years building up a solid reputation.
With over 18 years in his field, Tyra Rikimaru, CPO and his wife Gina decided to take a big step of faith and move to South Orange County to raise their 3 young girls. Within a year they decided to start Innovative Prosthetic Solutions, Inc. in Lake Forest, Ca.
Almost 30 years later, Tyra has been able to not only help amputees and orthopedic patients but has been an educator as well. He has spent time giving back to the field by educating therapists, doctors, and third party payors. He has been blessed to begin fulfilling a desire of doing missionary work in his field and would like to continue this throughout the years.
